How to Install Your Clothesline

Six steps from hardware to hanging laundry — includes the manufacturer's step-by-step visual guide.

Ben-Mor clothesline installation guide — 6-step infographic: determine pulley location, hang pulley on hook, thread clothesline through pulleys, join ends in mini winch, tighten winch, hang clothes on finished clothesline
1
Check your municipality first. Some areas restrict clothesline installation. Choose an open location with maximum sun exposure and airflow. Avoid tree branches and electric wires.
2
Pick your two anchor points. One pulley mounts on or near the house; the other on a post, pole, or shed. Measure the distance between them — your cable must be at least twice that distance to form a complete loop. Both kits include 150 ft.
3
Install the house-side pulley. If you have vinyl or aluminum siding, install a 2×8 board between the frame and siding first to create a solid anchor. Screw the hook into the frame, then hang the pulley on the hook.
4
Install the far-side pulley. Wooden post: screw the hook directly in. Metal post: use a U-bolt and S-hook, then hang the pulley. The post must be solid — the line puts continuous pressure on it, especially with wet clothes.
5
Thread the cable and tighten. Run cable through both pulleys to form a loop. Join both ends in the mini winch. Turn the winch key to create tension — make sure cable is seated in both pulley grooves. Cut any excess cable.
6
Use the spacer as you hang clothes. Clip the spacer onto both lines while hanging laundry — it keeps the loops separated and prevents wind from wrapping or tangling the lines.

Pro tip: For maximum convenience, add an elevator pole at the house end that raises and lowers the clothesline — especially helpful on long spans or when hanging heavy quilts and blankets without bending.

Common Questions

Things people ask before ordering a clothesline pulley kit.

For most standard backyards with everyday laundry loads under 60 ft, the Gold Heavy Duty does the job well. Upgrade to Silver Super Heavy Duty if your span is 60–75 ft, you're hanging heavy items daily (quilts, denim, blankets, farm laundry), or you want ball bearing clothesline pulley wheels for smoother, longer-lasting operation. Still not sure — call us at 1-800-251-8824 and we'll help you choose.
Both kits include 150 ft of cable. Because the cable forms a continuous loop through two pulleys, your maximum span between anchor points is approximately 75 ft. Measure your distance first and confirm that 150 ft covers it (span × 2 plus a few extra feet for the winch and hooks).
Yes — we carry all Ben-Mor Strata parts individually. That includes the 3.5", 6.5", and 8" clothesline pulley wheels (standard and ball bearing), spacers in two sizes, the ball-bearing tightener/tensioner, and 140 lb mounting hooks. See the accessories section above.
Standard pulleys use a plain bushing — they spin freely and work well for light-to-medium loads. Ball bearing pulleys have sealed bearings inside that dramatically reduce friction. Under a heavy load of wet laundry, ball bearing clothesline pulley wheels spin noticeably more smoothly and last significantly longer with daily use. The Silver kit and our 6.5" and 8" individual pulleys use ball bearings.
The kit provides every clothesline component. You'll need a drill and appropriate screws or lag bolts for a wooden post or house frame. For a metal post, add a U-bolt of the appropriate size. Most installs are straightforward and take under an hour. The YouTube installation video walks through every step.
Yes — both kits are designed for permanent outdoor installation. The PVC-coated cables resist weather and moisture. For harsh winters with heavy snow or ice buildup, the Silver Super Heavy Duty kit's galvanized cable handles the extra stress better. Some customers remove the cable for winter storage and rehang in spring — the pulleys can stay mounted permanently.
No. A pulley clothesline system keeps cable permanently strung between two fixed anchor points. You stand in one spot and pull the line toward you as you hang clothes. Retractable clotheslines coil back into a wall housing when not in use. Pulley systems handle heavier loads, span longer distances, and are better suited for full household or homestead laundry.
