On a crisp winter afternoon in Willis, Virginia, as the last of the honey is tucked away in jars for the season, Brian and his family, our neighbor and dedicated beekeeper, set to work on another treasured product of their hives-our locally made 100% pure beeswax candles. Raised on a Barn Farm, known for its abundant apple orchards, has been home to bees for years, buzzing between blossoms and producing golden honey. But as Brian quickly realized, the bounty of a beehive doesn't stop with honey. What might be considered a byproduct-the beeswax left behind-is a gift all its own. Starting in 2024 the beeswax is now lovingly poured into candle molds during the quiet months of winter.

Brian, often seen on his trusty lawn mower or carefully moving his bee boxes around the farm, has a deep respect for the hardworking bees. Their presence is felt even beyond the hives, as they flit around the small creek where our children play. These bees, diligent and determined, are responsible for so much-pollinating the orchards, sweetening our tea, and now, lighting our homes. Every part of their work is valuable, and what was once given away as Christmas gifts has now become a treasured offering for the community.
